The Need

People in Africa are facing crises in many different directions. With the onset of political liberation four decades ago, the ordinary African person believed that political liberation would usher in opportunities for improved social and economic conditions. However, with decades of failures in the socio-political and economic arena, and faced with the reality of an unending circle of poverty, disease, corruption, misappropriation of funds and wastage of public funds and resources, the average African is today bewildered, disappointed, and locked up in self-doubt and despair. What with the social, political and economic changes that have resulted in exposure to globalization, the collapse of the African family and social institutions! The disillusionment of the ordinary African is great indeed!!

With no abiding social structures to fall back on, no wonder that religious activities are exploding all across Africa. Evangelical efforts have resulted in increased number of converts, with at least 25,000 people coming to Christ every week. Unfortunately, however, increased growth has not resulted in the deepening of growth and walk in the Christian faith.  Christians, generally, are not well grounded in the truths of the gospel,  their worldviews are not wholly bible centered, and the outworking of their faith in society leaves much to be desired.

The failures in the social, political and economic arenas of Africa are traceable solely to bad leadership. In the same vein, the church in Africa has been plagued not only with the problem of ill equipped leaders, but also with the absence of sufficiently equipped leadership necessary to provide guidance for the multitudes that are coming to Christ every day. There is, therefore, a crying need for leaders, with servant attitudes, leaders though wise as serpents, are nonetheless gentle, firm and selfless. Doves International seeks to develop such leaders on the continent of Africa – leaders who are equipped with a broad understanding of communication techniques and leadership skills, and grounded in the values of integrity, justice and fairness, who, filled with the power of the Holy Spirit would communicate and lead with tenderness and love.

*(DOVES is an acronym for: Developing Outstanding Value Enhancing Servants)
