Ministry Highlight: Bethlehem Star of Peace

God’s Light in the Midst of Conflict

Bethlehem Star of Peace (BSOP), a team from the Philippines, is sharing the love of Jesus in Thailand and Cambodia, where about only 2% of the population is Christian, and many have never heard the story of Jesus. BSOP seeks to fulfill the Great Commission where Jesus said, " go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

In both countries, BSOP teams are deeply committed to building relationships with locals, teaching the gospel, and planting churches as long-term missionary fieldworkers. They teach English classes, introducing the gospel naturally through conversation, while also hosting children’s camps, Bible studies, church services, and ministry music lessons. They are active in their communities, being the hands and feet of Jesus, serving vulnerable groups such as survivors of human trafficking, children with disabilities, and ministering in prisons.

Serving in Cambodia
BSOP has a dedicated team of six women serving across Cambodia: Mary Jane, Aide Rose, Flindy, Ann, Jennifer, and Glenda.
BSOP - Team Cambodia

In July, a border dispute between Cambodia and neighboring Thailand escalated to a heavy exchange of artillery fire, forcing people near the border to flee their homes. Some sought safety in shelters, while others were welcomed by families who opened their homes to strangers escaping the conflict. BSOP team member, Aide Rose, serving in Oudor Meanchey province near the border, was among those evacuated.

The widespread safety concerns stirred up fear and reopened deep wounds from years of historical hardship and trauma. Yet, BSOP’s Cambodia team remained ready to serve and minister through the pain. They held payer meetings and Bible studies, creating welcoming spaces for deep, healing conversations. Together, they strengthened one another through prayer and shared insights from God’s Word.

Mary Jane described these moments as “a sacred opportunity to listen, comfort, and pray with them.” She shared how the church became a source of support by gathering more earnestly in prayer, as a place for people to share their stories from the past and talk through fears they were experiencing from the current conflict. They talked about the survival of the past that “left scars on bodies, minds, and souls”.

Many gathered in the room in prayer.

Finding Hope in the Midst of Conflict
Even as conflict continued, the BSOP team drew people deeper into a relationship with God. Mary Jane led a class for the ARM Cambodia Education Department, using art to help tell their stories:
Teachers creating art with clay.
“I invited them to create something beautiful out of clay. As their hands molded shapes, their faces glowed with smiles—creativity springing forth even in the shadow of fear. I was moved to tears as I listened to their stories. We bowed together in prayer. Their hope rests in God—that peace will prevail not only at the border but also in every heart. Indeed, every battle with fear is an opportunity for God’s power to shine.”

As peace talks began, Ann and team delivered relief supplies to families in evacuation centers: a school, a military camp, and a corn & cashew plantation.

BSOP - Ann Ledesma - food for displaced people2
“Along the way, I saw “Kuyons" (wagons) with families and their belongings inside going back to their homeland near the border. And as we traveled, my heart welled up with deep compassion. No words could describe the fear and pain they felt during the war. I wanted to burst into tears in front of them, but instead God gave me the courage to tell them that Jesus is the Savior. I handed out the gospel tracts and shared that only JESUS can give us peace at this time. I asked the kids and the elderly about their reactions as they heard the gunfire and bombing. A man shared that 3 bombs had fallen near the children’s evacuees center, and they didn't explode. They were scared and didn't know what to do but to cry. I've witnessed God's grace and protection during the conflict.”
Faith and Freedom in Jesus

Reflecting on her experience, Aide Rose shared how followers of Jesus can be strengthened through faith even in times of fear:

“Two weeks of displacement have come to an end. All roads leading to the northern borders in the country were packed with local Kuyons loaded with their families, up to 3rd or 4th generations of families, carrying a few small bags, portable burners, and mosquito nets. Motorbikes and some cars were also traveling back to their homes. The sounds of the dispute were replaced with the rejoicing of locals and foreigners alike who had made it through.

However, for the followers of Jesus, it is more than physical freedom but renewed and strengthened faith in the Lord.; understanding vividly that FREEDOM (in Christ) – we are in the world, but we are not of this world!

Indeed, there is FREEDOM in Jesus!”

Mary Jane recalled the generosity, kindness, and unity of the Cambodian people, those who shared food, opened their homes, and became “the peacemakers.”

“Let us all be God’s peacemakers—for His Kingdom and His glory.”

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:9-10
