GHI Spring Newsletter 2024 – Christianity and the Struggle for Justice
Christianity and the Struggle for Justice
On a Sunday morning in January, Global Horizon’s Ubuntu training team, led by Dr. Leon Rodrigues and Dr. Samuel Zalanga, held a seminar at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley. The thought-provoking message aimed to shed light on the history of the legacy of Christian activism and advocacy for social justice. Believers are reminded of the commitment we share to a more just and compassionate world:
Long ago, in the rich history of Christian thought, the work of Saint Augustine of Hippo continues to resonate, particularly in his famous book, “The City of God” that a society without justice is a gang of robbers, given that some people are more privileged and powerful than others resulting in a misuse of power with impunity.
I was left with a better understanding of the historical roots of many of my beliefs, essentially, seeing myself in context, or to use the African term, Ubuntu, "I am because we are!" Through history we see God's people struggling with the world and with what Jesus was calling them to do. - Daan Klem, GHI President
