GHI Fall Newsletter 2021 – Afghan Refugee Crisis

As a supporter of mission work, we know you care deeply about what is going on in the news and the world. As part of our mission to restore communities, Global Horizons Inc. (GHI) has joined the effort to care for the Afghan refugees that made the journey to the US, to start over.

Afghan Refugee Crisis:
Where are they now? How can I help?

Our Director of Operations, Jill Hall, GHI is leading an effort to assist Afghan refugees now living at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Read below for the most up-to-date news and ideas from Jill regarding how we can help:

Let’s Remember

“One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic.”

– Joseph Stalin

I saw this quote over a decade ago in a Holocaust Museum in Hungary and was reminded of it again in early September as I was reading the newspaper on my way to Florida.  It was a couple of days before 9/11 and it struck me that there was not a mention in this national newspaper about the situation in Afghanistan or the tens of thousands of Afghani Refugees that fled.  That made me sad, as the evacuation had only happened 10 days previously.

How heartbreaking that life changing situations and events, that impact so many thousands of families and individuals are so quickly and easily forgotten.  But should they be?

While we can’t change the situation, we can help some of the thousands of Afghani children, women, and men evacuated to the U.S. Even as I write, there are 12,700 refugees at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, less than 300 miles from Minneapolis and Chicago.

I feel a special connection to this group of people because I have a personal friend who came to the U.S. as a refugee from Afghanistan years ago.  He is now actively engaged in assisting these refugees who have just fled and arrived in this country.

Each of these 12,700 refugees nearby are special individuals – moms, boys, girls, young women, teenage boys, fathers, who have left their home, their culture, and their country to find a place of physical safety, a place where they might have a future.   While we can’t change what has happened, we can help them to get settled and help give them hope.

THINGS WE CAN DO TO CARE

  1. C – CONSIDER how to pray daily for these recently arrived refugees.  Don’t let their challenging situation be forgotten.  Ask a friend to join you in prayer.

  2. A – ARRANGE to donate a new or gently used winter coat in October.  Email Jill@globalhz.org to set up a drop-off place and time.

  3. R – RESEARCH how you can practically help a new Afghani refugee family when they come to our area later this year.  Pray over what you learn and how God might want to use you.

  4. I – IMAGINE what it would be like to leave your home and your friends, with just the clothes on your back and the sandals on your feet and go to a distant country that spoke a language you didn’t know.  Write a welcome card or draw a picture with your kids to send to an Afghan refugee family. Let them know you care and that you are praying for them. Send the cards and pictures to: GHI, 2422 East 117th St., Burnsville, MN 55337. We will deliver them to the families.

  5. N – NEWSPAPERS and NEWS CYCLES don’t have to determine what is important to you and your family.  Find sources of information to keep you informed about the people and things that truly matter to you.

  6. G – GIVE TODAY to help Global Horizons raise $5000 for coats, hats, gloves, shoes, winter clothing, diapers, formula, teapots, etc. for new Afghani refugees who have nothing of their own.

Let’s show God’s LOVE to our new Afghani neighbors.

Let’s help bring GOODNESS out of tragedy and trauma.

Let’s be a beacon of HOPE for our new Afghani friends.

Partner Projects in the Spotlight

Enrich Leadership Network – Ghana

A blessing from Pastor Albert Botchway, director of Enrich Leadership Network:

“As always, we are thankful to the Lord for your partnership and commitment to our ministry which you are a part of. Your daily prayers and financial commitments have sustained us, even in these challenging times.

The scripture says, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding, it is established; through knowledge, its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” (Proverbs 24:3-4)

The more knowledge and understanding we have about these challenges; the Holy Spirit will help us to apply God’s Wisdom to move forward. May you be encouraged in your walk with the Lord. May His grace abound more and more on you. May you overcome every situation you are facing.”

The Christian church in Ghana has grown quickly. Enrich Leadership Network was created out of a need for pastoral training and equipping to bring transformation to areas of dysfunction. Challenges from the most recent training seminars:

  • Coaching and mentoring of seasoned pastors and new upcoming pastors, through difficult conversations that build unity and allow all to use their gifts.
  • Engaging with youth on topics impacting their daily lives, like relationships.
  • Leading a church as interim pastor through COVID 19.

On behalf of our staff and the cadre of volunteers, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your partnership and support of our annual Justice and Mercy (JAM) Run/ Walk.

Thank you for letting us count on you. It was a beautiful late summer day and we were so happy and excited by your presence and messages of support. This year’s highlight, in addition to the run, was the art auction.

Our volunteers may have other brilliant ideas next year and if you have any other ideas please drop us a line. Thank you for bidding on our auction items and we hope you had great fun.

I hope you will join us again next year.
Richest blessings.

You helped raise over $3,500 by walking, running, purchasing art, or making a donation!

Funds will be used to welcome and equip additional partner projects worldwide, while promoting the message of gospel-based reconciliation.
